Top picks: TV

The Testaments (April 8)

In Margaret Atwood’s foreboding dystopian nightmare The Handmaid’s Tale, the United States has been overthrown by a totalitarian Christian theocracy. In response to plummeting fertility rates, the regime strips women of their rights and enslaves those who remain fertile as “Handmaids” – condemned to lives of ritualised suffering in service of the ruling class.

The sequel, again drawn from Atwood’s words, stars One Battle After Another’s Chase Infiniti and Lucy Halliday as Agnes and Daisy. They play two teenage girls enrolled at an elite preparatory school for future wives, under the watchful eye of the formidable Aunt Lydia (Anne Dowd). Positioned as a coming-of-age story, the series promises to be another unsettlingly prescient experience.

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair (April 10)

He may be all grown up, but he’s still stuck in the middle. The original 2000s run of Malcolm in the Middle was a hugely popular comedy starring Frankie Muniz as the perpetually exasperated child prodigy Malcolm. Surrounded by chaos – Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek as his combustible parents, Hal and Lois, and brothers Francis, Reese and Dewey in various states of menace – Malcolm’s childhood is anything but idyllic.

Now Muniz, Cranston and Kaczmarek reprise their roles in this four-episode follow-up. Malcolm, who has spent more than a decade keeping his distance to shield himself and his daughter, is pulled back into the family orbit when Hal and Lois demand his presence at their 40th anniversary party.

Top picks: Films

Is This Thing On? (April 22)

With A Star Is Born and Maestro, Bradley Cooper has proven himself a director of note – those films alone earned five acting Oscar nominations. Is This Thing On? once again explores the fragility of the human spirit and the self-inflicted torment we so often endure.

Loosely inspired by the life of English comedian John Bishop (who receives a story credit), the film stars Will Arnett as a newly separated man who turns to stand-up comedy. Acerbic, poignant and sharply performed, it also features the ever-excellent Laura Dern as his long-suffering wife.

Pizza Movie (April 3)

Stoner comedy Pizza Movie is a zany, visually frenetic trip. Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo and Sean Giambrone play two social outcasts finding little joy in the supposed “best years of their lives” at college. Determined to have fun for once, the hapless pair stumble upon some mysterious pills and decide they’ve found the answer.

The resulting hallucinogenic high, however, quickly turns nightmarish. Their only way down is to eat pizza – but they’re too out of it to reach the drone delivering their order. Watch for a cameo from Daniel Radcliffe as a butterfly, because of course he does.
